Why no DRLs on the new 6?

Post by Tee in China on Wed May 18, 2011 5:47 am

Looking at the pictures I took it suddenly dawned on me that there are no DRLs on the MG6. Here all the new Roewe 350,550 and 750s all have them now so how did they get missed on the 6? Watched the ads on the website and didn't see any there either!

I thought it was the law now for all cars to have daytime running lamps. Surprised

Not law here yet, however there is already provision for these in the bumper when needed. Wink

Hmm, according to all the information available this is what I found....

European Union Directive 2008/89/EC came into force on the 7 of February 2011 all new passenger cars and small delivery vans through out the EU will have to come equipped with daytime running lights. This will also be the case for Trucks and buses in August 2012.

So how have they got away without them then??

    There are two possibilities.

Many vehicles made in small numbers usually get around such requirements, I imagine the 2000 vehicles MG expect to sell in the UK fall well under the threshold. For example ABS was made mandatory circa 2003/2004 however manufacturers such as Morgan and TVR never had ABS to some or all of their cars. They never had airbags.

It could be because the 6 was homologated before 7 Feb, only new models tested on or after the date will need to have them fitted.

Hi Roverman, Yes TVR and Morgan did indeed get away with no ABS or air-bags since the EU directive of 2000 this was due to their production levels being under 500 per year - so if 2000 MG6GT's were assembled then they must comply with standard ABS,dual airbags and also DRL surely - seeing as they are well over the threshold limit?

Having said that all Roewes have them now - even here but no MG6 I have seen has them but that could be when they were built and if it is a legal requirement here in the PRC, that I dont know!

I asked MG on facebook why the MG6 doesn't have DRL's. This is the reply they gave me.

"No the MG6 does not have DRL’s, the reason is quite complicated and is down to the way the vehicle has been type approved. Prior to 7th February 2011 if the vehicle has already been type approved and the lighting installation approval is to a certain issue level DRL’s are not required. You are correct in thinking that all new cars type approved from 7th February 2011 will need to be fitted with DRL’s. As more new models are launched the amount of cars without DRL’s will decrease. Any future new MG models will be fitted with DRL’s"

would that mean the MG6 saloon will have them or has that already been approved as a variation rather than a new model I wonder!

I reckon the 6 saloon will be the first new MG to feature DRL's.
